Zinc supplementation in Celiac Disease is supported by scientific rationale, though the strength of evidence is moderate and largely based on addressing secondary deficiencies rather than directly treating the underlying condition. Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disorder where ingestion of gluten leads to damage of the small intestine. This damage results in malabsorption of various nutrients, including zinc. Zinc is essential for numerous biological processes, including immune function, growth, and maintaining the integrity of the mucosal barrier in the gut. Studies have shown that newly diagnosed celiac patients often present with zinc deficiency due to chronic intestinal malabsorption (Valdimarsson et al., 1996; Halfdanarson et al., 2009).

While a strict gluten-free diet is the cornerstone of celiac disease management and leads to eventual mucosal healing and normalization of nutrient absorption, zinc supplementation may be recommended in the early phase of treatment for those with documented deficiency. Some clinical trials and case reports suggest that zinc supplementation can accelerate the normalization of serum zinc levels and may support immune function and mucosal repair in these patients. However, there is insufficient evidence that zinc supplementation directly modifies the course of celiac disease or its symptoms in those who are not deficient. Thus, zinc is used as supportive therapy to correct a frequent complication of celiac disease, rather than as a primary treatment.
