Violet (typically referring to Viola odorata or similar species) has traditionally been used in herbal medicine for various minor ailments, including oral health issues like canker sores (aphthous ulcers). Its application is primarily based on folk medicine practices, especially in parts of Europe and Asia, where violet leaves or flowers may be made into rinses or poultices for soothing inflamed mucous membranes.

However, there is a lack of rigorous scientific studies evaluating the efficacy of violet specifically for canker sores. Most of the rationale comes from the plant’s known content of anti-inflammatory and mild antimicrobial compounds, such as flavonoids and saponins, which theoretically could provide some symptomatic relief. Historical herbal texts may reference its use to “cool” or soothe mouth sores, but these claims have not been substantiated by controlled clinical trials.

As such, while violet is referenced in traditional medicine for mouth sores, and its general properties could be plausibly beneficial, there is little direct scientific validation. The evidence rating is low due to this lack of robust data, and its use today is mostly based on tradition rather than well-demonstrated efficacy.
