Sumac (commonly referring to species in the Rhus genus, particularly Rhus coriaria) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, especially in the Middle East and Mediterranean regions. It has been used traditionally for a variety of ailments, including as a remedy for mouth and throat conditions such as canker sores (aphthous ulcers). The rationale for its use is mostly based on its astringent, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties, which are attributed to its high content of tannins, flavonoids, and organic acids.
However, scientific validation for the efficacy of sumac in treating canker sores is limited.
