Evidence supporting the use of: Pagoda Tree
For the health condition: Canker Sores
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Pagoda Tree (Sophora japonica), particularly its flower buds (known as "Huai Hua" in traditional Chinese medicine), has a long history of use in East Asian herbal medicine. Traditionally, these flower buds have been applied to treat various bleeding disorders and inflammatory conditions, including canker sores (recurrent aphthous ulcers). The rationale is primarily based on the belief that Pagoda Tree flower buds have “heat-clearing” and “blood-cooling” properties, which in traditional Chinese medicine theory are thought to help resolve mouth ulcers and reduce inflammation.
There are limited scientific studies directly evaluating the efficacy of Pagoda Tree for canker sores. Some laboratory studies have identified anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds in Sophora japonica, such as flavonoids (notably rutin and quercetin), which could theoretically provide relief from oral ulcers by reducing inflammation and promoting healing. However, the clinical evidence is sparse, and no large-scale, high-quality randomized controlled trials have been published to specifically support its use for canker sores. As a result, its use for this purpose is primarily justified by tradition, with only modest supportive evidence from pharmacological studies on its general anti-inflammatory effects. More clinical research is required to validate its efficacy and safety in this specific context.
