Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Lime (Citrus aurantiifolia or Citrus limon, or their juice) has traditionally been used in some cultures as a home remedy for canker sores (aphthous ulcers), primarily due to its acidic nature and purported antimicrobial properties. Folk medicine practices in regions such as South Asia and Latin America have recommended applying lime juice directly to sores to "clean" the wound or speed healing. However, there is little to no scientific evidence supporting this practice. In fact, applying acidic substances like lime juice to an open ulcer can cause significant pain and may potentially irritate the lesion further, delaying healing. Scientific literature does not recognize lime juice as an effective or recommended treatment for canker sores, and no clinical trials have validated its efficacy for this use. Most medical guidance suggests avoiding acidic or spicy foods during outbreaks to minimize discomfort. Thus, while the use of lime for canker sores has traditional roots in some cultures, it lacks robust scientific support and may be counterproductive.
