Evidence supporting the use of: Indian Coraltree
For the health condition: Canker Sores
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Indian Coraltree (Erythrina variegata) has been traditionally used in various systems of medicine, such as Ayurveda and folk medicine, for the treatment of oral ailments, including canker sores (aphthous ulcers). Its use is based primarily on the belief that extracts from the bark, leaves, or flowers possess anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antimicrobial properties, which may help soothe mouth ulcers and promote healing. There is some ethnobotanical documentation that communities in India and Southeast Asia apply preparations of Indian Coraltree locally to oral ulcers to alleviate discomfort.
However, scientific validation for its effectiveness against canker sores is minimal. Few in vitro studies have shown that Erythrina variegata extracts have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, but these studies do not directly address canker sores, nor are there clinical trials evaluating its efficacy and safety for this specific use. As a result, while the traditional use is well-documented, robust scientific evidence is lacking. Therefore, its use for canker sores is justified by tradition rather than by modern clinical research.
