For the health condition: Canker Sores
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Hedyotis, particularly Hedyotis diffusa (also known as Oldenlandia diffusa), has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for various inflammatory conditions, including canker sores (aphthous ulcers). In TCM, Hedyotis is believed to "clear heat" and "detoxify," addressing the underlying imbalances thought to cause mouth ulcers. It is commonly included in herbal formulations for oral ulcerations, often in combination with other herbs like Scutellaria and Coptis. However, despite its traditional use, there is very limited modern scientific research directly investigating the efficacy of Hedyotis species for canker sores. Clinical trials or pharmacological studies specifically targeting aphthous ulcers are lacking. The few available studies on Hedyotis focus mainly on its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and potential anticancer properties, but not on oral ulcer healing specifically. Thus, while its use is well-rooted in tradition and historical practice in East Asian medicine, scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness for canker sores remains weak or indirect.
