Copaiba balsam has a long history of use in traditional medicine, especially in South America, where it is derived from the resin of Copaifera trees. Its use for oral health issues, including canker sores (aphthous ulcers), is based primarily on its reputed anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Traditional healers have applied copaiba oil or balsam topically to help reduce pain and promote healing of various minor wounds and sores, including those in the mouth.

However, scientific validation specifically for canker sores is limited.
