Clerodendrum trichotomum, commonly known as Harlequin Glorybower, has a history of use in traditional medicine across parts of Asia, particularly in Chinese and Japanese folk remedies. Traditionally, various parts of the plant—including its leaves and roots—have been used for their purported anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antimicrobial properties. These traditional uses are not specifically limited to canker sores (aphthous ulcers), but rather extend to a variety of inflammatory and infectious conditions affecting the mouth and throat. In some ethnobotanical records, the plant has been applied topically or used as a gargle for oral lesions or discomfort, which may encompass canker sores. However, scientific validation for the specific use of Clerodendrum trichotomum in the treatment of canker sores is lacking. While some laboratory studies have identified certain bioactive compounds in the plant (such as diterpenoids and flavonoids) with general anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity, there are no robust clinical trials or specific studies directly evaluating its efficacy for aphthous ulcers. Thus, while the traditional use exists and provides a rationale for its application, the evidence supporting this use is weak and largely anecdotal.
