Boxthorne, commonly referring to species within the Lycium genus (such as Lycium barbarum or Lycium chinense, often known as goji berry or wolfberry), has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in China. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Lycium fruit is considered to have nourishing and moistening properties, and is sometimes included in remedies for oral ulcers or canker sores (aphthous ulcers), attributed to its supposed ability to "clear heat" and promote tissue healing. However, this use is largely based on traditional practice and anecdotal reports rather than rigorous scientific studies. There is a lack of high-quality clinical trials specifically assessing the efficacy of boxthorne for canker sores.

Some preclinical studies suggest that Lycium species have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties, which could theoretically be beneficial for oral mucosal healing.
