Evidence supporting the use of: Bee propolis
For the health condition: Canker Sores
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Bee propolis has some scientific evidence supporting its use in the treatment of canker sores (aphthous ulcers). Propolis is a resinous substance collected by bees from plant buds and has been used traditionally for various oral and topical conditions. In the context of canker sores, a handful of clinical studies and randomized controlled trials have explored its efficacy. Several small-scale clinical trials have shown that propolis can reduce pain, inflammation, and healing time of aphthous ulcers. The proposed mechanisms include its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties, likely due to its flavonoid and phenolic content.
For example, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in 2007 in the Journal of Clinical Dentistry found that daily use of a propolis-containing mouth rinse led to a statistically significant reduction in the number of new canker sores and shortened healing time compared to placebo. Another randomized controlled trial (2010, Phytotherapy Research) demonstrated that topical propolis extract resulted in faster pain relief and healing than placebo.
While these findings are promising, limitations such as small sample sizes, variability in propolis preparations, and lack of large-scale trials mean the evidence is moderate, not definitive. Overall, propolis is a scientifically promising adjunct for managing canker sores, but further research is needed to establish standardized protocols and confirm long-term safety and efficacy.
