Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Bacteria, specifically certain probiotic strains, have been investigated for their potential role in supporting or treating canker sores (aphthous ulcers). Recent scientific studies have explored the use of probiotics such as Lactobacillus reuteri, Lactobacillus brevis, and Streptococcus salivarius for their ability to modulate the oral microbiome and reduce inflammation. Several randomized controlled trials have shown that probiotic lozenges or mouthwashes can reduce pain, lesion size, and healing time in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis compared to placebo. The proposed mechanisms include competition with pathogenic bacteria, enhancement of mucosal immunity, and production of anti-inflammatory substances.

However, while the results are promising, the body of evidence is still limited by small sample sizes, variability in probiotic strains used, and differences in study design. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses suggest a positive trend but emphasize the need for larger, well-designed trials before probiotics can be recommended as a standard treatment. There is no strong historical or traditional use of bacteria for canker sores; the practice is rooted in recent scientific inquiry. In summary, while scientific validation exists and continues to grow, the evidence base is moderate (rated 3/5) and probiotics are not yet universally recognized as a primary treatment for canker sores.
