Evidence supporting the use of: Artemisia Herba-Alba
For the health condition: Canker Sores
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Artemisia herba-alba, also known as white wormwood, has a long history of use in traditional medicine across North Africa and the Middle East. In folk medicine, the plant is applied for a variety of ailments, including digestive disorders, infections, and as a topical agent for wounds and mouth ulcers, which includes conditions like canker sores (aphthous ulcers). Historical ethnobotanical surveys from regions such as Algeria, Morocco, and Jordan indicate that Artemisia herba-alba is sometimes used as a mouth rinse or topical application for oral lesions, relying on its reputed antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. However, while there is substantial traditional knowledge regarding its use for oral health, the scientific evidence specifically validating its efficacy for canker sores is limited. A few in vitro studies demonstrate that extracts of Artemisia herba-alba possess antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities, which could, in theory, be beneficial for managing canker sores. Nonetheless, no clinical trials or robust preclinical studies directly support its use for this condition. Thus, the support for Artemisia herba-alba in treating canker sores is primarily traditional, with some weak plausibility based on its biological properties, but lacking direct scientific validation.
