Evidence supporting the use of: Aloe Polysaccharide
For the health condition: Canker Sores
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Aloe polysaccharides, primarily derived from Aloe vera gel, have been investigated for their potential to support the healing of canker sores (recurrent aphthous stomatitis). Several small clinical studies and reviews suggest that topical application of Aloe vera gel can reduce pain and accelerate healing of these oral ulcers. The active polysaccharide components, such as acemannan, are thought to exert anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and wound-healing effects. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in the journal Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology, and Endodontology (2007) found that Aloe vera gel was more effective than placebo in reducing ulcer size and pain. Another study in the Dental Research Journal (2012) reported similar findings, with improved healing rates in the Aloe-treated group compared to controls.
However, while these findings are promising, studies tend to have small sample sizes, short follow-up periods, and methodological limitations. Systematic reviews conclude that Aloe vera (and by extension, its polysaccharides) may offer symptomatic relief, but that stronger evidence from larger, well-designed trials is still needed. The use of Aloe for canker sores is based more on preliminary scientific evidence rather than long-standing traditional use for this specific condition.
