Evidence supporting the use of: Aloe
For the health condition: Canker Sores
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Aloe vera is commonly used to support the healing of canker sores (aphthous ulcers), and there is some scientific evidence to support its topical application for this purpose. A number of clinical studies have evaluated the effect of Aloe vera gel on oral ulcers. For example, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in 2012 in the journal Dental Research Journal found that topical application of Aloe vera gel significantly reduced the size and pain of aphthous ulcers compared to placebo. Similarly, another study published in Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology, and Endodontology (2010) showed faster healing and pain reduction with Aloe vera compared to standard treatments.
The proposed mechanisms of action include anti-inflammatory properties, promotion of wound healing, and antimicrobial effects, all relevant to the healing of oral mucosal lesions. Aloe vera gel contains compounds such as acemannan, which has been shown to accelerate tissue repair and reduce inflammation. While these findings are promising, most studies to date have been small and sometimes limited by methodological weaknesses.
In summary, the use of Aloe vera for canker sores is supported by several clinical trials and is consistent with its traditional use for wound healing and inflammation. However, larger and higher-quality studies are needed to establish its efficacy definitively. The current evidence base rates as moderate.
