Bran, particularly wheat bran and other cereal brans, has been studied for its potential role in cancer prevention, especially colorectal cancer. The scientific interest in bran stems from its high dietary fiber content, which may positively affect gut health and reduce carcinogen exposure in the colon. Observational studies have found that populations with high dietary fiber intake, including bran, tend to have lower rates of colorectal cancer. Mechanisms proposed include increased stool bulk, dilution of potential carcinogens, decreased transit time of fecal matter, and fermentation of fiber by gut bacteria to produce short-chain fatty acids like butyrate, which may have protective effects on colon cells.

However, the evidence is not uniformly strong. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have produced mixed results. Some RCTs have found no significant reduction in colorectal adenoma recurrence with high fiber or bran supplementation. Additionally, there is limited evidence supporting bran’s protective effects for cancers outside the digestive tract. Most authoritative bodies, such as the World Cancer Research Fund and American Institute for Cancer Research, acknowledge a probable protective effect of dietary fiber (including bran) against colorectal cancer but caution that evidence is less convincing for other cancers.

In summary, there is moderate scientific support for bran's role in colorectal cancer prevention, but evidence is not robust enough for strong clinical recommendations, and it should be seen as part of an overall healthy diet rather than a standalone preventive agent.
