Evidence supporting the use of: 3-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)prop-2-enoic acid
For the health condition: Cancer (prevention)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
3-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)prop-2-enoic acid is commonly known as ferulic acid. There is some scientific interest in ferulic acid for cancer prevention due to its antioxidant properties and its presence in various plant-based foods. Preclinical studies (in vitro and animal models) have shown that ferulic acid can scavenge free radicals, reduce oxidative stress, and modulate signaling pathways involved in inflammation and cell proliferation, all of which are processes implicated in carcinogenesis. Additionally, some studies suggest that ferulic acid may inhibit tumor growth or induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) in certain cancer cell lines.
However, clinical evidence in humans is lacking. There have been few, if any, well-controlled human trials directly examining ferulic acid supplementation and cancer prevention or treatment. Most of the available data are preliminary and do not translate directly to clinical recommendations. Therefore, while the use of ferulic acid for cancer prevention is supported by some laboratory and animal research, there is insufficient evidence from human studies to recommend its use specifically for cancer prevention or treatment at this time.
In summary, there is scientific interest and some preclinical evidence supporting the potential role of ferulic acid in cancer prevention, but the evidence is limited and not yet validated in humans.
