Magnesium is sometimes used to support or help manage calcium deposits (such as those seen in soft tissues or blood vessels), and there is some scientific basis for this practice, though the evidence is not robust. Magnesium and calcium are both essential minerals that play interrelated roles in the body. Magnesium acts as a natural calcium antagonist, meaning it helps regulate the movement of calcium in and out of cells, and can influence how calcium is deposited in tissues.
A deficiency in magnesium has been shown in animal and some human studies to promote abnormal calcification of soft tissues, including arteries (a process called vascular calcification). Several observational studies suggest that higher magnesium intake is associated with lower risk of vascular calcification and related cardiovascular disease. Mechanistically, magnesium can inhibit the formation and deposition of calcium phosphate crystals, which are a main component of pathological calcium deposits.
However, while the biological plausibility is strong and early evidence is promising, clinical trials directly testing magnesium supplementation for the treatment or reversal of established calcium deposits in humans are limited. Most research focuses on prevention rather than treatment. Therefore, while the use of magnesium for this purpose is scientifically plausible, the evidence is currently limited and not definitive. Its use should be considered as supportive and preventive, rather than as a primary treatment for established calcium deposits.
