Evidence supporting the use of: Plantain (unspecified)
For the health condition: Burns and Scalds
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Plantain (commonly referring to Plantago major or Plantago lanceolata) has a long history of traditional use in the treatment of minor burns and scalds. In Western herbalism, folk medicine, and ethnobotanical sources, plantain leaves have been applied topically as poultices to soothe inflamed skin, reduce pain, and promote healing of burns. The mucilaginous nature of the leaves, along with their purported anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, are cited as reasons for their use. Several historical texts, including those from European and Native American traditions, document this application.
There is, however, limited scientific validation for plantain’s effectiveness in treating burns. Some laboratory and animal studies have noted wound-healing, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects of plantain extracts, but robust clinical trials in humans for burn treatment are lacking. The evidence is thus predominantly traditional, with some mechanistic plausibility suggested by modern research, but insufficient to firmly rate its efficacy beyond historical use. Plantain remains a popular remedy in folk medicine, but its use for burns should be viewed as supplementary, not a substitute for established medical care.
