Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Orchids have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems across Asia, particularly in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. Some species of orchids (e.g., Dendrobium, Bletilla striata) have been used topically or as ingredients in poultices for the treatment of skin wounds, including burns and scalds. Historical texts cite their application for cooling, soothing, and promoting skin healing. Among these, Bletilla striata (commonly known as "Bai Ji" in Traditional Chinese Medicine) is noted for its hemostatic and wound-healing properties and is sometimes used for minor burns. However, scientific validation for these uses is limited. There are a few in vitro and animal studies suggesting anti-inflammatory and wound-healing effects of certain orchid extracts, but robust clinical data in humans are lacking. The evidence is thus largely traditional, supported by anecdotal and historical reports rather than modern clinical trials. Due to the lack of standardized preparations and limited safety data, orchids are not widely endorsed in evidence-based medicine for the treatment of burns and scalds. Therefore, while tradition supports their use, scientific evidence remains weak.
