Birch polypore (Piptoporus betulinus) has a long history of traditional use in folk medicine, particularly in European regions where birch trees are common. Historical accounts and ethnobotanical sources indicate that dried slices or poultices made from the fruiting body of birch polypore were applied topically to burns, wounds, and scalds. The traditional rationale stems from its perceived antiseptic and soothing properties, as well as its ability to form a protective barrier over damaged skin. Some records from Eastern European and Scandinavian folk medicine describe its use for promoting wound healing and reducing infection risk in superficial skin injuries, including burns and scalds. However, there is a lack of robust scientific evidence to validate these traditional claims specifically for burns and scalds. While laboratory studies have shown that extracts of birch polypore possess antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities, these studies are preliminary and do not directly address the healing of burns or scalds in clinical settings.
