Evidence supporting the use of: Aloe vera
For the health condition: Burns and Scalds
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Aloe vera has a long history of traditional use for treating burns and scalds, but there is also substantial scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for this purpose. Multiple clinical studies and systematic reviews have found that topical application of aloe vera gel can help reduce healing time, pain, and inflammation in minor burns compared to conventional treatments. The bioactive compounds in aloe vera, including polysaccharides, glycoproteins, and antioxidants, are believed to promote wound healing by stimulating fibroblast activity, enhancing collagen synthesis, and reducing oxidative stress at the wound site. A 2012 systematic review published in the journal Burns concluded that aloe vera may be effective in the treatment of first- and second-degree burns, leading to faster healing than some standard treatments like silver sulfadiazine. Additionally, aloe vera’s cooling and soothing sensation provides symptomatic relief for burn victims. While most evidence supports its use in minor burns, there is less data for severe or large-area burns, and aloe vera products should not replace medical care in such cases. Nonetheless, aloe vera gel, when used appropriately, is a scientifically validated adjunct for the treatment of minor burns and scalds.
