Evidence supporting the use of: Gotu kola
For the health condition: Bruises (healing)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Gotu kola (Centella asiatica) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Ayurvedic and Chinese systems, for promoting wound healing and reducing the appearance of bruises. Its topical application is believed to enhance the healing of minor skin injuries, including bruises, by stimulating collagen production and improving microcirculation. The primary compounds believed responsible for these effects are triterpenoid saponins (such as asiaticoside and madecassoside), which have been shown in laboratory and animal studies to promote fibroblast proliferation and increase collagen synthesis—key processes in tissue repair.
Although there is a substantial traditional basis for using gotu kola for bruises, direct scientific evidence from human clinical trials specifically addressing bruise healing is limited. Some studies have examined topical and oral preparations of gotu kola for wound healing and venous insufficiency, with results suggesting improved healing rates and reduced inflammation. However, these studies generally focus on broader skin healing or chronic wounds rather than acute bruising. As such, while the plausible mechanisms and traditional usage support its application, the evidence is not robustly validated by modern clinical research for bruises specifically. Therefore, the evidence rating is moderate, and its use for bruises is primarily justified by tradition, supported by some preclinical and indirect clinical findings.
