Baphicacanthus cusia, also known as Strobilanthes cusia or "Chinese indigo," has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, it is believed to "clear heat," "cool the blood," and "reduce swelling," which translates to its application for managing inflammation and trauma-related discolorations such as bruises. Historical medical texts, such as the Compendium of Materia Medica (Bencao Gangmu), describe the use of indigo-derived preparations for both internal and external injuries. However, scientific validation for these specific claims is limited. Few modern pharmacological studies have directly evaluated Baphicacanthus cusia or its extracts for efficacy in bruise healing. Some research points to anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties of its constituents (such as indirubin), which could theoretically contribute to wound healing or reduced swelling, but there is no robust clinical evidence demonstrating clear benefits for bruises specifically.
