Aucubin is an iridoid glycoside found in several medicinal plants, notably Plantago species (plantain) and Aucuba japonica. Its use for bruises and wound healing is primarily rooted in traditional herbal medicine. In folk medicine practices, plantain leaves, which are rich in aucubin, have been applied topically to support the healing of bruises, minor wounds, and inflammatory skin conditions. These traditional applications are documented in European and Asian herbal texts, where poultices made from plantain leaves were used to reduce swelling and promote tissue repair.

Scientific research on aucubin specifically for bruises is limited. While some in vitro and animal studies have shown that aucubin possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and wound-healing properties, these studies do not directly assess its effectiveness in bruising or contusion models. For instance, aucubin has demonstrated the ability to modulate inflammatory mediators and promote fibroblast activity, which are theoretically relevant to bruise healing, but direct clinical evidence in humans is lacking.

Therefore, the use of aucubin or aucubin-containing plants for bruises is mainly justified by traditional use, with only preliminary pharmacological support for its potential actions. There is insufficient high-quality clinical research to firmly validate its efficacy for this indication.
