Their use in supporting bruise healing is primarily based on their vascular-protective and anti-inflammatory properties. Several studies suggest that anthocyanosides can strengthen capillaries, reduce capillary permeability, and improve microcirculation, which are relevant mechanisms in the healing of bruises (ecchymoses). For example, bilberry extracts standardized for anthocyanoside content have been shown in small clinical trials and animal studies to reduce capillary fragility and to promote faster resolution of bruising and edema after trauma or surgery.
