Evidence supporting the use of: Achyranthes
For the health condition: Bruises (healing)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Achyranthes, particularly Achyranthes aspera, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for the treatment of injuries, including bruises. In Ayurvedic texts, the plant is described as having anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties, and its paste or decoctions have been used topically to alleviate swelling, pain, and discoloration associated with bruising. The traditional rationale is based on its purported ability to promote blood circulation and resolve blood stasis, which are considered important in the management of bruises and minor injuries.
While there are some preliminary laboratory studies indicating that extracts of Achyranthes may possess anti-inflammatory and wound-healing effects, robust scientific evidence in humans, specifically for the treatment or accelerated healing of bruises, is lacking. Most of the support for its use in this context remains anecdotal or based on traditional knowledge rather than clinical trials. As such, the justification for using Achyranthes for bruises is primarily traditional, and the strength of evidence is moderate at best (rated 2 on the scale), pending more rigorous scientific validation.
