Serratiopeptidase is an enzyme derived from the bacterium Serratia marcescens and has been utilized primarily as an anti-inflammatory and mucolytic agent. Its use in bronchitis is supported by some scientific studies, although the evidence base is limited and not particularly robust. Serratiopeptidase is believed to reduce the viscosity of sputum, making it easier to expectorate, thereby potentially providing symptomatic relief for patients with bronchitis. Several small-scale clinical trials and observational studies have reported that serratiopeptidase can improve sputum clearance and reduce coughing in patients with chronic airway diseases such as bronchitis and sinusitis. For example, a few randomized controlled trials from India and Japan have shown a decrease in sputum thickness and frequency of cough in patients treated with serratiopeptidase compared to placebo or standard therapy alone. The proposed mechanism involves the proteolytic activity of the enzyme, which breaks down inflammatory mediators and excess mucous protein components in the airways. However, the quality of available studies is generally low, with small sample sizes and methodological limitations. Major clinical guidelines do not currently recommend serratiopeptidase for bronchitis, and more high-quality research is needed to confirm its efficacy and safety. In summary, while there is emerging scientific evidence suggesting a possible benefit, it is not yet strong or universally accepted by the medical community.
