Hemp (Cannabis sativa) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, including in some regions for respiratory conditions such as bronchitis. In traditional Chinese medicine, hemp seeds have been used as a remedy for coughs and other respiratory complaints, though primarily as a laxative. In Western herbal tradition, cannabis preparations (which may include hemp) were sometimes used in the 19th and early 20th centuries for their expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, the use was more often associated with cannabis products containing notable levels of THC, rather than non-psychoactive industrial hemp.

Despite these historical uses, there is little robust scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of hemp (specifically low-THC industrial hemp) in the treatment or support of bronchitis. Most modern research on cannabinoids and respiratory health focuses on THC and CBD, with mixed results; smoked cannabis, for example, can worsen bronchitis symptoms. Hemp seed oil, which lacks significant cannabinoids, does not have evidence supporting a direct benefit for bronchitis. Overall, the use of hemp for bronchitis is rooted more in traditional or historical practice than in validated scientific research.
