Evidence supporting the use of: Flavonones
For the health condition: Bronchitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Flavanones are a subclass of flavonoids, naturally occurring compounds found in citrus fruits and other plants. Their use to support or treat bronchitis is primarily justified by emerging scientific evidence, though the level of validation is still limited and mostly preclinical. Several laboratory and animal studies have demonstrated that flavanones such as hesperidin and naringenin possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. These properties are relevant to bronchitis, a condition characterized by inflammation of the bronchial tubes, often triggered or worsened by infection and oxidative stress.
Some in vitro studies show that flavanones can inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and reduce oxidative damage in respiratory epithelial cells. Animal studies suggest that flavanones may alleviate airway inflammation and improve lung function in models of respiratory disease. However, clinical data in humans with bronchitis are scarce; most evidence comes from studies on related respiratory conditions or on the general anti-inflammatory effects of flavanones.
Historically, citrus extracts rich in flavanones have been used in traditional medicine for respiratory complaints, but specific documentation for bronchitis is limited. Overall, while there is scientific rationale and some experimental evidence suggesting potential benefits, robust clinical trials in bronchitis patients are lacking, and therefore the evidence supporting flavanones for this indication remains preliminary.
