Curcumen (most commonly referring to extracts from Curcuma species such as Curcuma zedoaria or Curcuma longa) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. These traditions have employed Curcumen-containing plants to address respiratory conditions such as bronchitis, cough, and other lung ailments. The use is typically based on the herb's reputed anti-inflammatory, expectorant, and antimicrobial properties. However, while there are in vitro and animal studies indicating that curcuminoids—compounds found in Curcuma species—exhibit anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, high-quality clinical trials specifically evaluating Curcumen or Curcuma extracts for bronchitis in humans are lacking. Thus, the evidence is limited and largely anecdotal or based on historical accounts. Some herbal pharmacopoeias still list Curcumen as an adjunct in respiratory formulas, but modern clinical guidelines do not support its use due to insufficient evidence.
