Capsaicin, the active compound in chili peppers, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Asia and Latin America, for the management of respiratory conditions such as bronchitis. Traditionally, capsaicin-containing remedies are believed to help "clear the lungs" and relieve congestion due to its pungency and ability to induce a sensation of warmth and increased mucus flow. Folk practices often include inhalation of chili vapors or ingestion of spicy foods to alleviate chest discomfort and loosen phlegm associated with bronchitis.
From a scientific perspective, there is some rationale for these traditional uses. Capsaicin is known to stimulate sensory nerves, leading to increased mucus secretion and potentially aiding in the clearance of airway secretions. Some small studies and anecdotal reports suggest that this expectorant effect may provide symptomatic relief in bronchitis. Additionally, capsaicin’s ability to desensitize certain nerve fibers (e.g., via TRPV1 receptor modulation) may reduce cough reflex sensitivity over time.
However, robust clinical trials evaluating capsaicin specifically for the treatment or support of bronchitis are lacking.
