Benzoin siam, the resin obtained from Styrax tonkinensis, has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Southeast Asia. It has been utilized in various forms, such as incense, tinctures, and inhalations, for respiratory complaints including bronchitis, coughs, and laryngitis. The rationale in traditional systems is primarily based on its aromatic properties, which are thought to help loosen mucus and ease breathing when inhaled. Benzoin has also appeared in European pharmacopeias, often as a component of compound benzoin tincture ("Friar's Balsam"), which was historically used as an expectorant and inhalant for bronchial congestion.

However, modern scientific research validating these uses is extremely limited. The evidence for its efficacy in treating bronchitis is almost entirely anecdotal or based on historical records rather than rigorous clinical trials. The resin contains compounds such as benzoic acid, cinnamic acid, and essential oils, which may have mild antiseptic or expectorant properties. Yet, there is a lack of controlled studies confirming its safety or effectiveness specifically for bronchitis. Thus, while Benzoin siam’s use for bronchitis is well documented in traditional medicine, scientific validation is lacking.
