Bee propolis has a history of use in traditional medicine for respiratory ailments, including bronchitis, but there is also emerging scientific evidence that supports its potential benefit. Propolis is a resinous mixture produced by bees, rich in polyphenols, flavonoids, and other bioactive compounds that exhibit antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties. Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that propolis extracts can inhibit the growth of bacteria and viruses commonly implicated in respiratory infections and reduce markers of airway inflammation. Small clinical studies and case reports have suggested that propolis supplementation may help reduce the duration and severity of bronchitis symptoms, particularly when used as an adjunct to standard treatments. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in 2017 found that propolis extract, when combined with conventional therapy, improved recovery from acute bronchitis compared to placebo. However, the quality and size of clinical trials remain limited, and there is a lack of large-scale, high-quality randomized controlled trials to conclusively establish efficacy and safety. Overall, while there is some scientific support for the use of bee propolis in bronchitis, the evidence is preliminary and not robust enough to recommend it as a primary treatment. It appears most promising as a complementary therapy, but further research is needed.
