Southern Tsangshu, commonly known as Atractylodes lancea or "Cang Zhu" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is traditionally used to address various conditions, including the treatment of boils and other skin infections. In TCM, Southern Tsangshu is classified as an herb that dispels dampness and strengthens the spleen, but it is also sometimes included in formulations that address "toxic heat," which is believed to contribute to the formation of boils. Historical texts such as the Shennong Bencao Jing and subsequent materia medica reference its use in this context, often in combination with other herbs like Jin Yin Hua (honeysuckle) or Lian Qiao (forsythia fruit) for external or internal use in managing sores, abscesses, and boils. However, there is limited scientific evidence specifically validating the effectiveness of Southern Tsangshu against boils or skin infections. While some laboratory studies have identified antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties in extracts of Atractylodes lancea, these findings are preliminary and have not been directly linked to clinical efficacy for boils. Thus, its use for boils is based primarily on traditional practice rather than robust scientific research. The evidence supporting its efficacy for this condition is therefore rated as moderate from a traditional perspective, but low from a scientific perspective.
