Sophora species, particularly Sophora flavescens (commonly known as Ku Shen), have a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for treating various skin conditions, including boils (furuncles). According to TCM theory, Sophora is believed to clear heat and dry dampness, and its bitter and cold properties are thought to help resolve toxic swellings and pus, which aligns with the TCM understanding of boils as manifestations of "heat toxin." Herbal formulas containing Sophora are often administered both topically and internally for skin infections, abscesses, and boils. However, direct scientific validation for the use of Sophora in treating boils specifically is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that extracts of Sophora flavescens possess antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, largely attributed to compounds such as matrine and oxymatrine. These properties could, in theory, help in the management of bacterial skin infections like boils, which are most commonly caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Nonetheless, clinical trials or strong scientific analyses directly linking Sophora use to effective treatment or support for boils in humans are lacking. Therefore, the use is primarily justified by traditional practices, with some supportive but indirect pharmacological evidence.
