Sanicle (Sanicula europaea and related species) has a long-standing history in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe, for the treatment of skin conditions such as boils, wounds, and ulcers. Historical herbals and folk medicine sources commonly reference sanicle as a vulnerary (wound-healing) and cleansing herb, sometimes recommending poultices or topical washes for inflamed skin lesions, including boils. The rationale for its use was primarily based on its perceived ability to "cleanse the blood" and promote healing of suppurative skin eruptions.

However, the evidence supporting its efficacy for boils is almost entirely anecdotal or rooted in traditional practice. There are no well-conducted modern clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies that confirm the effectiveness of sanicle for boils. Phytochemical analyses reveal that sanicle contains saponins and tannins, which may have mild astringent or antimicrobial properties, but this has not been directly correlated with efficacy against boils in scientific literature.
