Plantain (Plantago spp.) has a long history of traditional use in the treatment of skin conditions, including boils. In various folk medicine systems, the fresh leaves are crushed and applied as a poultice to the affected area. This practice is rooted in traditional herbalism, where plantain is valued for its purported anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties. Historical texts and ethnobotanical surveys document its use across Europe, North America, and Asia for drawing out pus and reducing swelling in skin infections such as boils.

The rationale behind its use is partly due to the presence of bioactive compounds in plantain leaves, such as aucubin, allantoin, and flavonoids, which are believed to promote healing and reduce inflammation. While there are in vitro studies indicating that plantain extracts possess antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects, there is a lack of high-quality clinical trials specifically evaluating its efficacy in treating boils in humans.
