Melaleuca alternifolia, commonly known as tea tree oil, is widely used for its antimicrobial properties. Its application in the treatment of boils (furuncles) is supported both by traditional use and by a growing body of scientific evidence. Boils are typically caused by bacterial infections, most often Staphylococcus aureus. Tea tree oil contains terpinen-4-ol and other constituents with proven antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity. Several in vitro studies have demonstrated tea tree oil's efficacy against S. aureus, including methicillin-resistant strains (MRSA), which are common culprits in skin infections. Clinical studies specifically focused on boils are limited, but some small trials and case reports suggest that topical application of tea tree oil (in diluted form) can help reduce infection, inflammation, and healing time for skin abscesses and minor wounds.

A review published in the International Journal of Dermatology concluded that tea tree oil is effective as an adjunct treatment for superficial skin infections. It is believed to work by disrupting bacterial cell membranes, thereby reducing bacterial load. Nonetheless, more robust clinical trials are needed to establish standardized dosing and safety protocols, as tea tree oil can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in some individuals. In summary, while traditional use is strong, current scientific evidence is moderate (rated 3/5), supporting tea tree oil as a reasonable complementary option for boils when used with appropriate precautions.
