Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Hemp Agrimony (Eupatorium cannabinum) has a history of use in traditional European herbal medicine, including applications for skin ailments such as boils. Historical herbal texts from the 16th to 19th centuries sometimes mention Hemp Agrimony as a cleansing herb, often used to "purify the blood" or promote the elimination of toxins, which, in the context of humoral medicine, was thought to help with skin eruptions like boils. Some folk practitioners used infusions or topical poultices made from the leaves or flowers for external application on abscesses or inflamed skin. However, these uses were based on empirical tradition rather than systematic observation or controlled studies.
There is no robust scientific evidence to support the efficacy of Hemp Agrimony for treating boils. Modern phytochemical analyses show that the plant contains various compounds such as sesquiterpene lactones, flavonoids, and pyrrolizidine alkaloids (the latter of which may be toxic), but there are no clinical studies or even substantial preclinical studies validating its use against the bacteria responsible for boils or its effectiveness in wound healing. Therefore, the use of Hemp Agrimony for boils is supported primarily by traditional knowledge, with very limited weak evidence and lacking modern scientific validation.
