Evidence supporting the use of: Cyperus rotundus
For the health condition: Boils
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Cyperus rotundus, commonly known as nutgrass or "musta" in Ayurveda, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems across Asia, particularly in Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Siddha. In these systems, it is considered to have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties. Traditional practitioners have used Cyperus rotundus rhizomes in poultices or decoctions to help reduce inflammation and support the healing of skin conditions such as boils, abscesses, and ulcers. The rationale is based on its purported ability to "cool" the body and reduce "toxins," concepts rooted in humoral and energetic theories of disease. While there are some scientific studies showing that extracts of Cyperus rotundus possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities [1][2], direct clinical evidence for its effectiveness in treating boils (furuncles) is lacking. Most of the available data are either in vitro or animal studies and do not specifically address boils or similar skin infections in humans. Therefore, the use of Cyperus rotundus for boils is primarily justified by traditional usage, with limited scientific corroboration regarding the specific indication. Its role in traditional medicine, however, is well documented.
