Centipeda minima, also known as “small sneezeweed,” has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in China and parts of Southeast Asia. Traditionally, it has been applied topically or taken orally to address a variety of skin conditions, including boils, abscesses, and sores. The rationale in traditional medicine is based on its perceived “heat-clearing” and “detoxifying” properties, which are believed to help resolve skin infections and reduce swelling.

Some phytochemical studies have revealed that Centipeda minima contains sesquiterpene lactones, flavonoids, and volatile oils, some of which exhibit anti-inflammatory and mild antimicrobial activities in vitro. However, direct scientific evidence (such as clinical trials or well-designed animal studies) specifically supporting the use of Centipeda minima for the treatment or support of boils is currently lacking. Most of the available data are from traditional medical texts and anecdotal reports rather than modern pharmacological research. Therefore, while traditional use is well-documented, the scientific validation supporting its efficacy for boils is limited, and further research is needed to confirm its effects and safety in this context.
