Caesalpinia crista, commonly known as fever nut, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani for the treatment of skin diseases, including boils (furuncles). The seeds and leaves are often applied topically as a paste or decoction to affected areas. The rationale in traditional medicine is based on the plant’s described “antimicrobial,” “anti-inflammatory,” and “detoxifying” properties. Texts such as the Bhavaprakasha and Sushruta Samhita mention its use for treating skin eruptions and wounds. However, while there is some preliminary scientific research indicating that extracts of Caesalpinia crista exhibit antibacterial activity against a range of pathogens (including Staphylococcus aureus, which commonly causes boils), such studies are limited to in vitro or animal models and do not directly evaluate efficacy for boils in humans. No large-scale clinical trials have confirmed its effectiveness for this specific use. Thus, while there is a strong traditional basis for its application in boils, scientific validation remains limited to early-stage studies suggesting possible mechanisms of action. More rigorous clinical research is needed to establish its efficacy and safety for this indication.
