Benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) is a naturally occurring compound found in cruciferous vegetables, and has been traditionally used in some systems of medicine, particularly Ayurveda and folk remedies, for its purported antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Its use for treating boils—a type of skin abscess caused by bacterial infection—stems mainly from these traditional uses, where plant extracts containing BITC or similar isothiocyanates were applied topically for skin infections.

However, there is very limited direct scientific validation for BITC specifically in the treatment or support of boils. Some in vitro studies have demonstrated that BITC possesses antibacterial activity against various pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus, which is a common cause of boils. Nonetheless, these studies are preliminary, often conducted in laboratory settings, and do not directly address clinical efficacy for boils in humans.

No controlled clinical trials or robust in vivo studies have established BITC's effectiveness or safety in the treatment of boils. Thus, while there is some mechanistic plausibility based on its antimicrobial properties, BITC's use for boils is primarily justified by tradition, with minimal empirical support from modern scientific research.
