Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Atlantic Cedar (Cedrus atlantica), sometimes also referred to as Atlas cedar, has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in North Africa and parts of the Middle East. Its essential oil and extracts have been used for various skin conditions, including boils, largely due to perceived antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. However, there is minimal scientific research directly evaluating Atlantic Cedar’s efficacy in treating boils specifically. The traditional use is based on the broader use of cedarwood oils in folk medicine for skin infections and as a general antimicrobial agent. Some in vitro studies suggest that cedarwood oil (from various cedar species) may have mild antibacterial or antifungal effects, but these findings are not robust, nor are they specific to Cedrus atlantica or to the pathogens typically involved in boils (such as Staphylococcus aureus). Modern pharmacological evidence is lacking, and no clinical trials support its use for boils in humans. Therefore, the use of Atlantic Cedar for boils is primarily justified by tradition, with very weak supporting evidence.
