Burdock (Arctium lappa) has a longstanding history in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Asian and European practices, where it is often used as a "blood purifier" and for various dermatological conditions. Its use as a remedy for body odor is grounded more in tradition than in scientific validation. Historically, practitioners believed that burdock helps eliminate toxins from the bloodstream through its diuretic and mild laxative properties, theoretically reducing odors excreted through sweat. It was also thought to have antibacterial effects, which might help with body odor caused by bacterial breakdown of sweat. However, scientific studies directly evaluating burdock's efficacy for reducing body odor are lacking. While some research highlights burdock’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and there is limited evidence for its antibacterial action, these findings do not specifically correlate with clinical improvements in body odor. Therefore, the use of burdock for this purpose is primarily supported by traditional use, anecdotal reports, and theoretical mechanisms rather than robust clinical evidence. The overall evidence level is low, and further research would be needed to scientifically validate its effectiveness for treating or supporting body odor management.
