The practice often involves applying cooled, damp green tea bags directly over closed eyelids. This traditional use is based on the perceived anti-inflammatory and soothing properties of green tea, which contains polyphenols such as catechins, as well as small amounts of caffeine and tannins. These compounds are believed to constrict blood vessels and reduce inflammation, which may temporarily alleviate redness and puffiness in the eyes. However, scientific evidence specifically supporting the use of green tea for treating bloodshot eyes is limited. While some laboratory studies have shown that green tea extracts possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, these studies do not directly address topical application to the eyes or clinical outcomes in humans.
