Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) has garnered scientific interest as a supportive treatment in blood poisoning, medically known as sepsis. Sepsis is a life-threatening condition triggered by an overwhelming immune response to infection, leading to widespread inflammation, tissue damage, and organ failure. Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant and plays a critical role in immune function, endothelial health, and the modulation of inflammatory responses. Several clinical trials and animal studies have explored intravenous vitamin C as an adjunctive therapy in sepsis. Some research has demonstrated that high-dose intravenous vitamin C, often in combination with hydrocortisone and thiamine (the "Marik protocol"), may reduce organ dysfunction, improve vasopressor requirements, and potentially lower mortality rates in septic patients. The proposed mechanisms include reducing oxidative stress, improving capillary blood flow, restoring endothelial function, and supporting adrenal hormone synthesis. However, the evidence remains mixed. While some small-scale studies and retrospective analyses suggest benefits, larger and more recent randomized controlled trials have failed to consistently demonstrate significant improvements in mortality or clinical outcomes. As a result, leading medical societies do not currently recommend routine vitamin C administration for sepsis outside of clinical trials. In summary, there is a moderate level of scientific evidence (rated 3/5) investigating vitamin C as a treatment for sepsis, with some promising, yet inconclusive, results. Ongoing large-scale studies may provide more definitive answers in the future.
