Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitex negundo, commonly known as the Chinese chaste tree or Nirgundi, has been traditionally used in various Asian folk medicines to support the treatment of bites and stings, particularly those from insects and snakes. In Ayurveda and other traditional medical systems, leaf extracts or pastes are topically applied to affected areas to provide relief from pain, swelling, and inflammation associated with bites and stings. The rationale for its use is based mostly on its documented anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antimicrobial properties in ethnobotanical literature.

Scientific validation for these specific uses is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that Vitex negundo extracts can reduce inflammation and pain, which could theoretically relieve symptoms from bites and stings. Additionally, a few preclinical studies have investigated its potential anti-venom effects, particularly against snake venom, but results are preliminary and not yet confirmed in humans. No large-scale clinical trials specifically support its efficacy in treating bites or stings in humans. Thus, while there is a strong basis in tradition and some supportive preclinical data, the overall scientific evidence remains weak and further studies are needed to confirm its effectiveness for this indication.
