Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Styrax balsam (also known as storax) has a long history of traditional use in various cultures as a topical remedy for bites and stings. Ancient medical texts and traditional herbal compendia, such as those from Greco-Roman and Middle Eastern traditions, often mention Styrax balsam as an ingredient in salves and ointments intended to soothe the skin and reduce inflammation following insect bites or stings. The rationale for its use appears to be based largely on its aromatic and resinous properties, which were believed to have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effects. However, there is minimal modern scientific research specifically evaluating the efficacy of Styrax balsam for this indication. Most of the support comes from ethnobotanical surveys and historical pharmacopeias rather than controlled clinical studies. As such, while there is a clear record of traditional use, the evidence supporting its effectiveness for treating bites and stings is limited and largely anecdotal, resulting in a low evidence rating.
